The Honourable J H Angas

John Howard Angas (1823-1904), pastoralist, politician and philanthropist, was the son of George Fife Angas, Chairman of the South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Company and one of the South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n colony's early founders. Angaston in the Barossa Valley was named after George. Both men made notable contributions to the development of the state of South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ thereafter through their philanthropy.
On the 25th day of October 1878 by a , the Hon John Howard Angas gave £4,000 to the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ to provide scholarships to encourage the training of scientific men, and especially civil engineers, with a view to their settlement in South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥.Ìý The Angas Engineering Scholarship was established and the were subsequently approved by Council.
In 1884 by a Covenant and Declaration of Trust, Angas gave £6,000 for the endowment of a Chair in Chemistry.
