IPAS Members Join New National Centre to Advance Health Sensing Technologies

Professor Mark Hutchinson and Associate Professor Jiawen Li from the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing are playing key roles in the newly announced ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Research Council (ARC) Training Centre for Transformative Health Sensing Technologies (HST Centre), a $5 million initiative led by the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Melbourne. Queensland ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Technology is also a key partner.

The Centre aims to advance wearable sensors, smart implants, and other health sensing technologies and transform them into validated, medical-grade devices capable of continuous, personalised monitoring of vital signs and biomarkers. These innovations are expected to improve proactive health management, early detection of complications, and personalised care for individuals.

At the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide, the Centre will be represented by:

  • Professor Mark Hutchinson, Node Leader and Chief Investigator
  • Associate Professor Jiawen Li, Chief Investigator
  • Dr Melissa Humphries, Chief Investigator
  • Professor Carolyn Semmler, Chief Investigator

The Centre will also develop a digital twin concept, using real-time data from health sensing devices to simulate a person’s health status and behaviour. This technology has potential applications across aged care, sports, defence, and workplace safety, supporting better preparation, resilience, and overall well-being.

The HST Centre brings together 21 partners, including international institutions such as Hokkaido ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ and the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Salford, as well as ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n hospitals, sports organisations, and industry leaders like Samsung Electronics ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ and ANDhealth.

This collaboration highlights ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥â€™s growing capability in MedTech innovation, creating opportunities for industry, researchers, and the next generation of highly skilled professionals.
