What motivated you to participate in an overseas experience?

With my love of travelling developed from a young age, I always had a desire to study abroad at some point in my degree. My last semester being all electives was ideal timing to put this vision into practice and step outside my comfort zone. I was optimistic and confident about this once in a lifetime experience positively shaping the person I would become.

What was the highlight of your Exchange?

Seeing the hot air balloons rise over the ancient chimney fairies of Cappadocia in Turkey was a moment I will never forget. It was something I had on my bucket list for years, and to not only witness it but also go on one with my friend was surreal. Beyond that, what truly stands out is the bond I formed with the amazing people I met who have become lifelong companions. I travelled with some of them to places like Cyprus, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, and even met some people in Portugal and Albania.

What challenges did you face during your Exchange, and how did you overcome them?

One of the main challenges was managing finances. Unfortunately, I wasn’t eligible for a study loan or any financial support schemes because I went in my final semester, so budgeting was really important. I wasn’t overly strict with my spending, but given that London is an expensive city, I had to be reasonably disciplined about how I handled my finances. I was lucky enough to have my parents partially support me financially, however I still I kept a record of my monthly expenses which definitely taught me how to prioritise and be financially responsible. Navigating public transport in a major city was also initially overwhelming (especially the Tube) but I eventually got the hang of it and later went to places without a map confidently.

What was your biggest takeaway from your experience?

I can adapt to literally anything. Whether it was figuring out complicated train routes, making lifelong friends, or embracing cultural differences, I proved to myself that I’m capable and resilient. I’ve come back from this experience with a deeper sense of curiosity about the world, more confidence in who I am, excitement about whatever God has planned for me next. Being able to travel twice a month to different European countries and celebrating my birthday on a solo trip to Albania also really opened my eyes to realise how blessed I am to have had this opportunity – it’s not something everyone gets to do.

How did this overseas experience impact your academic or career goals?

It gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities I might’ve otherwise hesitated or been scared to try. As mentioned before, I realised that I’m capable of living and thriving in different environments, which makes me more open to international work or study in the future. It also confirmed that I enjoy stepping into the unknown and taking on new challenges – something that’s valuable in any career. I’ve come back with a more global mindset, which I think will serve me well no matter where I go next.

Do you have one piece of advice you would tell other students thinking about going on Exchange?

Do it even if you’re unsure. Don’t let the potential costs of exchange scare or deter you from going – it might seem expensive but you may not have an opportunity like this again. It’s one of the best things you can do for yourself in terms of personal growth, exposure, and connection. Say yes to things, be open to meet people, and definitely travel as much as you can while you’re there.

What new skills or knowledge did you gain from the experience?

I became a better problem-solver, communicator, and traveller. I learned how to budget properly, navigate foreign places, communicate with people from all walks of life. I also became a lot more sociable – through initiating conversations more often, attending events on my own, and just putting myself out there in ways I previously would’ve been anxious about. These are skills that will definitely stick with me both professionally and personally.

What is something that would entice you to travel back to UK?

I’d go back in a heartbeat just to visit my friends and revisit some of the local places I didn’t get enough time to fully explore, like seeing more of the UK beyond London. There’s definitely much more to uncover. I also miss the convenience of the Tube and how affordable it was to travel to the EU.

How did participating in an Exchange influence your personal growth?

Going on exchange was truly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. After a difficult 2024, it felt like a complete rest – everyday brought a sense of renewal, excitement, and peace. I’ve never felt more like myself. I was genuinely happy, and it felt like I was finally breathing fresh air after a long time. I discovered new sides of myself that I didn’t know existed: more adventurous, more open, and more at ease with uncertainty. Spiritually, I became much closer to God during this time, and now I carry a calm trust into everything I do. I don’t overthink what’s ahead anymore, but instead just embrace it. I honestly felt like a different person while on exchange, and I am so thankful God gave me this opportunity. The joy I felt then is something I still carry with me now.
