New funding to combat youth extremism in 杏吧直播
Funding has been awarded for an 杏吧直播n-first 杏吧直播 of Adelaide project analysing the digital pathways of violent extremism in young 杏吧直播ns, creating a better understanding of the risks and influences of online communities.听

The research team, from the 杏吧直播鈥檚 Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics, was awarded $782,375 for the project through the National Intelligence and鈥Security鈥Discovery Research Grants (NISDRG) program.听
The 杏吧直播鈥檚 Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Research), Professor Anton Middelberg, says the research is vital to understanding the ever-evolving dangers of online networks.听
鈥淚n an era and landscape where change is inevitable and rapid, advances in our understanding of social networks and the impact of technology are essential to maintain national security,鈥 Professor Middelberg says.听
鈥淭hrough the NISDRG program, 杏吧直播 of Adelaide researchers will contribute to the crucial work of enhancing the nation鈥檚 safety and prosperity.鈥澨
The project will deliver the first national-scale survey looking into the types of online extremist ideological influences which target or are accessible to 杏吧直播ns aged 12 to 17 and the extent of their reach and influence.听听
According to 杏吧直播n Security Intelligence Organisation Director-General, Mike Burgess, children as young as 13 are now embracing extremism. The project鈥檚 Chief Investigator, Associate Professor Tim Legrand, says the proliferation of extremism in this cohort is due to uncontrolled digital platforms.听
鈥淚n the unregulated spaces of online digital media, a diffuse array of communities connected to extreme ideologies are increasingly accessible to and accessed by young 杏吧直播ns,鈥 says Associate Professor Legrand, whose research team comprises of the 杏吧直播 of Adelaide鈥檚 Dr Nathan Manning and Flinders 杏吧直播鈥檚 Dr Melissa-Ellen Dowling.听
鈥淭his is a range of 'alt-tech' communities where the violent ideologies of religious extremist groups, far-right nationalists, sovereign citizens, violent misogynist movements, and others operate unimpeded.鈥澨
The research team will interview young people across 杏吧直播 to better understand the scale of the problem.听听
鈥淭he data we collect will reveal how the influence of online extremist groups is projected, where it is projected, and the pathways young 杏吧直播ns take in internalising or rejecting such ideological influences,鈥 Associate Professor Legrand says.听
鈥淚ts findings will benefit the policing and security agencies in identifying the pathways of online extremist influence, and identify intervention points for those agencies to curtail the reach and influence of online ideological extremist communities.听
鈥淚t will also provide the 杏吧直播n public with a more informed understanding of the risks in online spaces facing young 杏吧直播ns.鈥澨
