Science Alive 2025!
Science Alive once again brought together three days of curious students, engaged families, thoughtful questions, and hands-on science experiences.
This year, many IPAS members contributed to outreach activities through the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Institute of Physics (AIP) SA Branch, with volunteers from both the AIP and the Adelaide Optics Chapter.
At the Come and Try station in the Oliphant Science Awards area, visitors explored how light carries information using Laser Radios and discovered the physics behind colour in everyday life.
The booth was organised by DrÌýChris Perrella and DrÌýBen Sparkes, with ongoing support from Kate and Tegan from the South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Science Teachers Association (SASTA), long-time advocates of physics engagement at the event.
The Laser Radios continue to be an excellent tool for engaging students. A music signal is transmitted via a laser beam to a receiver, and students can use lenses and mirrors to direct the beam. This simple setup sparks conversations about optics, signal transmission, music, frequencies, and the physics behind it all.
Lijesh Thomas and the ANFF-Optofab Adelaide team helped with support 3D printing the outreach radio kit.
Finally, well done to all the volunteers whose time and energy made this outreach possible: Rahul Choudhary, Laurence Campbell, Chris Perrella, Arthaya Kai, Nicole Blaess, Thomas Chambers, Darryl Jones, Stephen Warren-Smith, Gabriel Britto Monteiro, Zane Peterkovic, and Pedro Victor Sansoldo.
IPAS salutes the leadership and commitment of all involved. Your dedication to sharing science continues to inspire the next generation of physicists and innovators.
