Financial hardship can be a significant barrier for students wishing to attend university.

Lucas’ journey to university was not easy, but thanks to an Augustus Short Scholarship – and his own personal determination – he has achieved an impressive 6.75 grade point average (out of 7) in his first year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)(Mechanical) with a Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.

“After high school, I took a gap year and worked three jobs to save enough money to move from my hometown in the Riverland and pursue my dream of working in the �Ӱ�ֱ��n space industry,” Lucas said.

When he found out he’d been awarded a scholarship, Lucas’ relief was overwhelming.

“It has significantly eased the financial burden of relocating to Adelaide and allows me to wholeheartedly focus on my studies,” he said.

Lucas’ story is one of perseverance and sacrifice and he is working tirelessly to make his dream a reality. When Lucas graduates, he will be the first in his family to earn a university qualification. His journey is a reminder of the importance of support – with a scholarship to help pave the way, he’s determined to make the most of every opportunity, and his future is now brighter than ever.

The Augustus Short Scholarship, which is endowed, has been a lifeline to high achieving students experiencing disadvantage since 2003. However, over the past 20 years, we have received more scholarship applications than we can support, and hundreds of deserving students have missed out on this invaluable financial support during their studies.

Dr Augustus Short was the first Vice Chancellor �Ӱ�ֱ�� of Adelaide and believed that no student should be prevented from pursuing a higher education because of financial hardship. As the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide, Dr Short encouraged the creation of educational and charitable institutions that served the whole community.

We know that some of �Ӱ�ֱ��’s highest-achieving students run the risk of never attending university because they live in rural areas and/or are facing financial barriers. Augustus Short Scholarships offer these students meaningful financial support throughout their undergraduate degree, removing barriers to their participation in higher education.

In naming this scholarship fund, we acknowledge the profound impact Dr Augustus Short had on the �Ӱ�ֱ��.
