NEST - The Network for Emerging Sustainability Thinkers

Today, on World Environment Day, the Environment Institute is proudly launching NEST - the Network for Emerging Sustainability Thinkers.

NEST is a new network facilitated by the 2025 Future Leaders Committee of the Environment Institute and is tailored for higher-degree and early-career researchers within the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide.

NEST aims to empower emerging researchers with the capacity to meet interconnected challenges at a local and global scale, ranging from social to ecological to economic, and always a mix of all. It does this by facilitating skill-development specific to the research process and research outputs within and beyond the academic sphere, prioritising multi-disciplinary thinking and fostering an enabling and creative academic environment.

NEST doesn’t ask you to join the network for the sake of it, rather it is intentionally designed to be needs-based. Free in-person workshops will be tailored to higher-degree and early-career researcher needs, with our first one involving a 3 month long academic paper writing workshop, that will guide you through the steps of paper writing. NEST will also organise events that aim to simultaneously enable connection between researchers and have impact to the wider community.

Our first event will be a Planting Day on 19th July to support the restoration of critically endangered Fleurieu Swamps. Registration and more details can be found . Join us to connect with others and contribute to hands-on restoration. There is no cost to participants - transport is free, and lunch, drinks and nibbles are included.

We want to hear from you…. As we grow NEST, reach out to us if there are any skills you would like support with or training in; thinking you would like to explore; or wishes you have for your overall academic experience. A coding workshop? Discussion groups? Theory training? Mixed-methods deep dive? Let us know your needs.
