  • Biography/ Background

    Dr Valerie Caines has a Doctor of Philosophy (Management/OB) from the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n National ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, Canberra. She joined the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide in February 2022. Prior to joining ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide, she worked at Flinders ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ (South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥) and has had a long career in the private sector in senior HR Executive roles and Management Consulting.

    She is a Certified Practitioner with the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Human Resources Institute and is devoted to the HR profession and HR practitioner education. Her focus is on helping managers and organisations make better people realted decisions and is a professional member of the Centre for Evidence-Based Management (CEBMa).

    Val is passionate about making ageing at work a positive experience for both individuals and organisations. She is affiliated with the Work and Ageing Research Network (WARN) located at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n National ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ and a member of the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Association of Gerontology. Her program of research focuses on the management and development of older workers, retirement transitions, and employee development in late career.

    Her work has been published in Journal Organizational Behavior, Frontiers in Psychology, ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Journal of Management and Legal Ethics. She is also a regular reviewer for several journals including: Human Resource Management, The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Journal of Management, ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Journal of Career Development, Applied Psychology, and Behavioural Science. 

    Val is the Head of the Management Discipline in the Adelaide Business School.

  • Teaching Interests

    My command of the human resource management and management field has led to contributions toward curricula and teaching in both HRM and management. I have developed several courses including capstone courses. My teaching practice is informed by a robust teaching - research - practitioner connection.  

     

  • Research Interests

    Valerie is a member of The Work and Ageing Research Network (WARN) which brings together an active group of researchers examining the organisational and human resource implications of workforce ageing.

    Ageing workforce: How can we assist organisations and individuals to age well at work by adapting HRM policies and practices? How can we facilitate the transition to retirement process so that it is a positive experience for all? How do older workers use work and non-work social support to increase their wellbeing and career longevity?
