Institutional Biosafety Committee
The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) fulfils the function of an IBC under the Gene Technology Act 2000, and as a Biosafety Committee, as described in ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n/New Zealand Standard 2243.3:2022.
IBCs must be consulted by organisations conducting work with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Committee provides independent expert advice on risks associated with gene technology activities and undertakes assessment of applications for research or teaching involving gene technology.
Biosafety Committees are required for organisations working with microorganisms. They provide impartial, professional guidance on the risks and implications of research involving hazardous microorganisms and related samples and evaluate microbiological risk assessments.
The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide IBC consists of members that each have specialist knowledge in a particular relevant field. The IBC meets monthly. GMO dealing applications and microbiological risk assessments are assessed by the Committee as received. Contact the IBC Secretary if you require an estimate of the current assessment timeframes.
