Wednesday, 9 July 2003

One of ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s biggest chess events is on again at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide this weekend (July 12-13).

The annual ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ Open Chess Tournament has become one of ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s top 10 chess competitions. This year it will attract around 80 participants, including some of ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s best players.

This includes Grandmaster Darryl Johansen, International Master Stephen Solomon, State Champion and Correspondence International Master Srbo Zaric, Asian Under 16 Girls Champion Thu Giang Nguyen and female chess Olympian Narelle Szuveges.

The tournament also boasts a wide range of local talent including former State Champions Song Yang, Kevin Sheldrick, Alan Goldsmith and Bob Cowley.

"As well drawing top names in the chess scene, the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ Open prides itself on making chess available to all player abilities, including those who have not played competitive chess before," says the Chief Organiser, ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide student Andrew Saint.

"Our $4000 prize pool caters for the diversity of player strength and experience, and we would encourage all members of the community who have an interest in chess to attend, either as competitors or to see the tournament in action."
