Charles Hawker Scholarship Challenge

The Trustees of ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s richest privately funded scholarship have issued a challenge to year 12 and undergraduate students to think about what they might contribute to the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n community - and then apply for a 2002 Hawker Scholarship.

"It's curious at a time when the costs associated with a tertiary education are increasing, we are largely disappointed each year by the number of students applying for a Hawker Scholarship - a scholarship which in most cases provides a fully paid tertiary education" Hawker Scholarship Trustee Mr. Andrew Hawker said.

Since 1991, the Trustees have awarded more than one point one million dollars to twenty-nine young ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns, including several from regional ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥.

"Selection for a Hawker Scholarship is largely based on an interview. We are looking to provide significant financial support for capable, interesting young ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns. We know they are there and we'd like to talk to them about their aspirations and vision for the future," Andrew Hawker said.

Established by Charles Hawker's late sister Lilias Needham, the prestigious Charles Allan Seymour Hawker Scholarship is valued at more than $40,000 over four years and is the most financially generous privately funded scholarship available to year twelve and undergraduate students in ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥.

Describing the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship as 'ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s Rhodes', South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Education Minister Hon. Malcolm Buckby encourages year twelve and undergraduate students to visit the Hawker Scholarship web site to find out more about the remarkable Charles Hawker story and the scholarship named in his memory.

"The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship perpetuates the memory of scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman Charles Allan Seymour Hawker and commemorates his achievements as one of ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s most respected pastoral pioneers," Minister Buckby said.

Hawker Scholars are eligible to attend the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n National ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of New England, Adelaide ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, Flinders ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, Marcus Oldham Farm Management College and ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Cambridge UK.

Applications for 2002 Hawker Scholarships opened on December 3rd 2001 and close on Friday January 18th 2002.
