Adelaide says "Thank You" for medical research

A community event to be hosted for the first time at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide tomorrow will bring together medical researchers and members of the public, giving Adelaide a chance to say "Thank You" for life-saving and life-altering medical science.

(Thursday 15 November) will see some of the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s best medical scientists share their knowledge with the community about groundbreaking research, and will hear how medical science is making a major impact on people's lives.

Members of the community - including school children - will add their messages of support to a giant Thank You card that is travelling around the nation as part of the many Thank You Day events organised by .

Among the speakers at Thank You Day in Bonython Hall, ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide, will be:

  • (Professor of Microbiology)
    on research into bacterial infectious diseases, which kill millions of people every year;
  • (Head, )
    on research into obesity, which he describes as "the climate change of human health";
  • Ms Cadence Minge (PhD student, )
    an up-and-coming research talent, on the link between obesity and infertility;
  • Ms Gia Pyrlis (member of the community and breast cancer survivor)
    on how medical science has helped to save her life.

"As the State's most research-intensive university, and one of the most research-intensive of any university in ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide is a fitting location for this Thank You Day event," says the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s , Professor Richard Russell AM.

"This year alone the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide has won more than $30 million in new funding for medical research, which is aimed at tackling some of the biggest issues in health facing ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns and people right around the globe."
