Education the topic of prestigious public lecture

Friday, 27 April 2001

Public Policy and Higher Education is the subject of the 48th Joseph Fisher Memorial Lecture to be delivered by Professor Peter Karmel at Adelaide ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ on Monday 30th April (5.30pm)

The Fisher Lecture has been delivered biennially since 1904 and is one of ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s most prestigious public lectures. Among the many eminent ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns who have given it over the years have been Robert Menzies, Nugget Coombs, Essington Lewis and Fred Gruen.

It commemorates Joseph Fisher, a wealthy banker and businessman who gave £1000 to the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide in 1903 as an endowment for promoting the study of commerce. As one result of this endowment, the Joseph Fisher Lecture was established.

This year's lecturer, Professor Peter Karmel from the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n National Univeristy, is a distinguished economist, educationalist and administrator and has been an Adelaide ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ Emeritus Professor since 1965. He was appointed Professor of Economics at Adelaide ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ at the age of 28 and built up a highly regarded Department. In 1966 he became the first Vice-Chancellor of Flinders ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥.

The lecture takes place at Lecture Room 102, Napier Building. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
