Medical School boosts SA numbers

Wednesday, 7 February 2007

Another 27 South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n students have been offered a place in the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide's Medical School with the release of second round offers last night.

This brings to 72 the total number of places so far guaranteed for South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns in the 2007 intake.

Professor , Executive Dean of the , says it is likely that more than 80 of the 144 Medical School places will be taken by South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns when offers are finalised in late February.

"Considering that 2140 school leavers from across ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ applied to study Medicine at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide this year, this is a great result for South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n students," he says.

A total of 78 second round offers for entry into Medicine at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide were made last night, including 10 tertiary transfer places and the opportunity for five State Government Rural Bonded Scholarships to be taken up, which will help address the shortage of country doctors in South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥.

Of the 72 declined offers from the first round, 71 were from interstate applicants.

"Overall, 67% of the total acceptances have come from South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ and that percentage will improve as interstate applicants pull out in favour of later round offers from their home States," Professor Beilby says.

"The competition for places in the Medical School is very high and this is reflected in the fact that 65% of those offered places this year have achieved a TER of 99.95."

The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s Medical School has received a 16% increase in applications this year, with 613 people offered an interview for the 144 places.
