High demand for uni's medical degree

The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide's Medical School made its first round of offers today, with 47 South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns guaranteed a place in the high-demand course, which experienced a 16% increase in applications this year.

Professor Justin Beilby, Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, said he anticipated that by the end of the third round of offers in late February, South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n student numbers would increase.

"Thanks to the additional 40 medical places allocated to the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ for 2007 by the Federal Government, as well as the five extra rural bonded places funded by the State Government and the 10 places offered through our Tertiary Transfer Scheme, we will go a long way towards providing for the State's future medical workforce needs."

The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ will offer a total of 144 Medical School places to ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n students this year, including 11 supported by the State and Commonwealth Governments to address the critical shortage of doctors in country areas.

The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s amended selection process for Medicine now gives equal weighting (40%) to the (TER) and the Oral Assessment, with the (UMAT) accounting for the remaining 20%.

"This revised weighting gives the State's highest achieving students the best possible chance of getting a place in Medicine at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide," Professor Beilby said.

Of those South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ns who received offers today, 10 had perfect scores.

A total of 2140 school leavers from across ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ have applied to study Medicine at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide, one of the most respected schools in the country.

Almost 14,000 students sat the UMAT nationally and internationally in 2006, including 1006 from South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ - a 12% increase on the previous year.

More offers will be made in the next few weeks.
