Major boost for health disciplines

An additional 45 nursing, clinical psychology and mental health places have been awarded to the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide for 2007.
Ten extra places will be allocated to , while 35 extra places will be allocated to , including 25 places for mental health nursing.
Federal Health Minister the Hon announced the funding increase yesterday, confirming a national allocation of 2850 additional university places in health-related disciplines.
The news coincides with the Federal Government's decision to fund an extra 60 medical places for South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ next year, 40 of these for the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor said the extra places for medicine, nursing, clinical psychology and mental health would help the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ address skills shortages in these areas.
"It's an excellent result for South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ and the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥," he said.
"With the State facing an ageing population, health has been targeted as an area which will require additional resources and skills in the future. The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ welcomes the opportunity to play a major role in helping the State Government to meet these workforce needs."
