Key Takeaways from Professor Göran Roos' Energy Crisis Presentation

Professor Göran Roos' Energy Crisis Presentation

Last week, ISER Adjunct Professor Göran Roos delivered a presentation titled Comparative Analysis of Energy Crises: Political and Structural Lessons from South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥â€™s Blackouts and the Iberian Peninsula’s Energy Shocks.

His presentation explored the energy trilemma, the challenge of achieving sustainability, affordability, and reliability in power systems. Using case studies from South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ (2015) and the Iberian Peninsula (2025), Professor Roos examined blackout events and highlighted vulnerabilities within power systems that often remain hidden until failure occurs.

Key focus areas included structural vulnerabilities, political risk, market design, and the implications for industry and innovation ecosystems.

Professor Roos addressed both commonalities and differences across these areas, offering political risk management strategies, insights into market design and economic impacts, and final policy recommendations.

The presentation was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Professor Peter Draper from the School of Public Policy and Economics. Panellists included Craig Oakeshott (Market Specialist, ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Energy Market Commission), Vince Duffy (Deputy Chief Executive, Department for Energy and Mining), and Rebecca Knol (CEO, South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n Chamber of Mines and Energy).

The panel delved deeper into the energy trilemma, discussing system vulnerabilities, industry perspectives, and approaches to risk-sharing.
