Hollow Core Fibre fabrication capability demonstration
With a new project supported by funding from the Defence Trailblazer, Northrop Grumman ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ and the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide will explore fabrication of a type of hollow-core fibres specifically optimised for fibre optic gyroscopes (FOGs). FOGs are a key component of modern navigation systems that can operate in the absence of GPS signals.
In this project, Hollow Core Fibres will be optimised for structural uniformity, yield strength, and reproducibility. This careful design can reduce backscattering noise and improve the performance and long-term accuracy of FOGs.
Project leads include IPAS member and ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ Chief Investigator Dr Erik Schartner, along with Dr Dushy Tissa, Industry Project Lead with Northrop Grumman ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥.
