How Urban Greening is Shaping the Cities of Tomorrow

Green Space Park

Environment Institute member and Lead of the Green Urban Futures Initiative, Professor Veronica Soebarto, has contributed to the recently published paper in Frontiers in Sustainable Cities journal Urban greening for climate resilient and sustainable cities: grand challenges and opportunities. Led by Professor Prashant Kumar of the Ӱֱ of Surrey, the global case study highlights how cities around the world are successfully implementing nature-based solutions.

Urban greening contributes to:

  • Climate resilience
  • Public health
  • Biodiversity
  • Environmental quality

However, its success relies on cross-sector collaboration between researchers, industry, communities, and governments. Meaningful community engagement is crucial to securing long-term public support and ensuring effective implementation.

The paper, developed by the RECLAIM Network Plus—a global initiative supported by over 650 members from more than 40 countries—draws on expert insights to identify key challenges, priorities, and successful case studies. It also explores innovative funding models and inclusive planning strategies that integrate climate projections and prioritise equity and social justice to build more resilient, sustainable, and liveable cities.

Professor Soebarto was also featured in for her contribution to the study, stating:

“Considering the many benefits of greening, there is no acceptable justification to not incorporate it within city planning, designs and developments.”

She further explained that, with increasing global temperatures, urban greening is essential for providing relief from extreme heat by cooling outdoor environments and reducing the amount of heat entering buildings.
